{"id":1727,"date":"2018-03-05T20:02:49","date_gmt":"2018-03-05T20:02:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cardiologynownews.org\/?p=1727"},"modified":"2018-03-23T19:49:12","modified_gmt":"2018-03-23T19:49:12","slug":"thrombectomy-done-after-6-hours-has-a-favorable-prognosis-in-a-selected-group-of-stroke-patients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiologynownews.org\/?p=1727","title":{"rendered":"Thrombectomy Done Beyond 6 Hours has a Favorable Prognosis in Stroke Patients"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a recent study published in the<em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa1713973\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New England Journal of Medicine<\/a><\/em>, it was found that endovascular thrombectomy for ischemic stroke that is performed 6 to 16 hours after<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the onset of symptoms resulted in better functional outcomes than standard medical therapy alone among patients with a proximal middle cerebral artery or internal carotid artery occlusion.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The current evidence shows that endovascular treatment is only of benefit if it is done within 7-8 hours of the onset of symptoms. The trial only included patients with a salvageable tissue on perfusion imaging.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Gregory Albers, the principal investigator and the director of Stanford Stroke Center<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPrior to DAWN and DEFUSE 3, there was no evidence of any treatment benefit beyond 6 hours from symptoms onset.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe key to the success of these trials was the use of RAPID software to identify patients with salvageable tissue\u201d, he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before its termination for efficacy, the study enrolled 182 patients who were randomized either to endovascular treatment in addition to medical treatment or medical treatment alone. The endovascular treatment group had a better-modified ranking score and lower mortality at 90 days.
